Post How did you do..
How do you modify the license plate bracket lights (the blues) to run as brake/indicatiors? Also the lenses appear to be glued in, but ive seen the red lenses for sale. Do they just snap in? im asking now cause i dont want to man handle them and risk breaking them

I would like to know the answer to this question also... is there a part number for the red lenses?

The lights will come out.
Pull the wire plug out of the socket in the back of the light and then it will unscrew...About a half turn...Do that for both lights.

I have the red Truk-lites, and also the plastic bracket that they mount on if you need them...

There is only one way to make them work as turn, tail lights and brake lights...

This is not for the beginer...

This was done on my 2004 FLHPI (Police Road King)

This is going on the asumption you have bought the tail light modulator from harley...
(This box converts your rear turn signal lights into running, turn and brake lights).
It is a little black box with 2 pigtails that harley sells for about $50.00 . It comes with red lenses and they replace the rear amber turn signal lenses. This box plugs into the wire harness that goes to the rear fender lights. All you do is unplug the harness and plug this in between the wiring harness.
This is located under the seat ( or seat pan, depending if you have the stock seat or not) behind the battery on the rear fender .

I will post pictures later and wire colors

If not, Get one...

The wires that you disconnected from the blue marker lights, you will have to follow that wire to where it plugs in to your harness.
Unplug it...

By this time you should have that part of the harness out of the bike....It is a Y harness...
Dont be afraid of the next step...

.....cut the wires where they come together at the y, you will now need to have 2 sets of wire leads instead of 1 set.
1 set of wires (power and ground) will be for the left side light and 1 set (power and ground) for the right side light.

You will need to add wire to where you cut the harness, from the plugs that go into the marker lights.
These wires need to be long enough to run up to where the modulator is.
Make sure there is enough wire !!!

You need to check the power wires with a test light ( After the modulator, black box) at the connector for the rear harness to find your left and right turn signal wires and of course find the ground and dont worry about looking for the brake light wire, just the left and right turn signals...

once you have found the turn signal wires for each side, splice each power wire into the modulator harness and then the grounds.

now those lights will be run, turn and brake lights....

Its late and sorry so short....
I will clean this up tomorrow with pictures and wire schematic colors
email cabellaspwc@yahoo.com with any questions.
I can make these harnesses for an easier installation.
Joe

Joe's write up is very good. If you don't have the modulator then you could just find the brake light wire and splice into that directly.

If you wanted indicators, then split the Y harness as Joe says and then splice the right side into the right indicator and left side into the left indicator... but without hte modulator you probably can't do both indicator and brake although I could be wrong.

Thanks for the write-up mobilepwc! I just want to use them for additional brake light usage only, so I probably won't get the modulator...

I will check my local truck stops (there is one right down the road from where I live) and see if they have the red truck-lites that fit the Harley light bracket... do you know a truck-lite part number off-hand, in case they don't have them?

They are the red Truk-lite 2 1/2 inch. I will look in the other garage and get the part number off the package later...

Here is what I ended up doing... I chose the cheapest and easiest route... ;)

I used the OEM tour pak connector (right under the the police radio rack on the left side) to connect the license plate marker lights to... it's plug and play - no wires to cut / splice.

If you leave the license plate marker lights harness pinned as from the factory, the lights will be on always (i.e. - running lights).

If you would like the marker lights to function as brake lights, you will have to re-pin the license plate harness... this is easy enough to do:

1. Flip up the connector lock on the wire side (pry gently on either side to release the tabs)
2. Remove Blue wire from the pin 1 position and relocate to pin 2 as follows:
3. With the connector lock up and looking into the terminal pin side of the connector, slide a very small flat jewleler's screwdriver along the bottom surface of the terminal pin until it stops.
4. Gently pry down until you here a click (pin lock disengaged).
5. Gently pull on the blue wire to remove it from connector housing (note pin orientation before fully removing) - if it will not come out, retry step 4.
6. Insert the blue wire into the pin 2 position (middle) on the harness - remember to insert it with the same orientation as it came out... press in until you hear a click.

BTW, you should be able to find the Red lamps to replace the blue ones at any local truck stop... they are the 2.5 in round clearance / marker lamps - name brands are Truck-Lite, Road Pro, Barjan, etc.

thanks for the detailed write up.
i ended up mounting aux light kit 68230-97B with a back up modulator which works well. but this method that you detailed is a much cheaper alternative.
good job!
